The "Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Trophy 2076" commenced at the Nepali Army HQs Sports Ground on August 18, 2019. COAS General Purna Chandra Thapa inaugurated the sports fest amid a special ceremony organised at the sports ground. Director General of Military Training & Doctrine (DGMT&D), Major Gen Sashi Chandra Bahadur Singh delivered the welcome speech.
At the beginning, the athletes and officials of the participating teams demonstrated a march past followed by various ethnical cultural processions. A spectacular band display was also performed by the Nepali Army Band.>
The Inter-Division Sports Competition includes Athletics, Swimming, Boxing, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Kabaddi, Cycling and Handball. Altogether fourteen teams of Nepali Army including eight Divisions, Special Forces, Supporting Arms and Independent Brigades are competing for the Trophy. The tournament will conclude on September 11, 2019.
During the opening ceremony, ex-COAS of Nepali Army, head of the Armed Police Forces (APF), Acting Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports, high ranking officials of Nepali Army and Nepal Police, Member Secretary and officials of National Sports Council (NSC), residential Military Attaches of various embassies in Kathmandu, officials of Defense Ministry and media personnel among others were present.
COAS Trophy was first introduced in 2065 B.S. with an aim to enhance sprite de corps and to produce quality athletes capable to compete in international platform. Nepali Army believes this kind of exposure to the athletes will be extremely beneficial for the sustainable development of the sports in national and international stages.
