Biography of Major General Jagadish Chandra Pokharel
Major General Jagadish Chandra Pokharel assumed duty as the General Officer Commanding (Division Commander), Western Division, Nepalese Army on September 1, 2016 after most recently serving as the Commandant of Army Command and Staff College, Shivapuri.
A native of Gulmi district Maj General Pokharel was born on June 24, 1961. He volunteered to join the Nepalese Army as an officer cadet and graduated as well as received his commission from Nepalese Military Academy, Kharipati in July, 1983. He has had multiple command and staff positions in various units throughout the last 33 years. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Pashupati Prasad Gana (Infantry Battalion) where he served in various capacities such as platoon commander, company second in command, and later the commanding officer.
He has served in command and leadership positions from the Company and battalion through Brigade and Division including the Ranasher Company (Independent Infantry Company), Pashupati Prasad battalion, Number 19 Brigade and currently Western Division. He was the Director at Public Relations Directorate as well as Spokesperson of the Nepalese Army from September 2013 to September 2015. He is also the Colonel Commandant of Rana Bhim Battalion.
His instructional appointments include instructor at Military Academy, Directing Staff, and Senior Instructor, Chief Instructor/Deputy Commandant as well as Commandant at Army Command and Staff College and Commandant at the Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre.
His notable staff appointments include Brigade Major, Operation Officer in an Infantry Brigade and Deputy Director; Staff Duties, Policy and Plans (DGMO) Army HQ. His operational deployment includes Platoon Commander-United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Liaison Officer-United Nations Protection Force in Former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR), Chief Military Transport Officer/ Chief MOVCON-UNIFIL, Commanding Officer- United Nations Mission in Sierra Leon (UNAMSIL) and Deputy Chief Military Observer-United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG).
Maj Gen Pokharel has successfully completed various military courses, several other courses and participated in various workshops & seminars both at home and abroad. He is an alumnus of Army command and Staff College, Shivapuri - Nepal, Defense Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur - Bangladesh, US Army War College, Carlisle PA- USA and fellow of Asia Pacific centre for security studies, Hawaii- USA. Major General Pokharel has completed Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Commerce from Tribhuban University, Nepal, Bachelor's Degree in Senior Level Defense Management from the University of Indore, India, Master's Degree in Defense studies from National University, Dhaka- Bangladesh, and Master's Degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College, Carlisle PA - USA.
Maj Gen Pokharel and Mrs. Sushila have been married for last 24 years and have two children.
