Biography of Major General Shamsher Thakurathi
Major General Shamsher Thakurathi was born in Dadeldhura, far-west Nepal, on 25th September 1960. He is the youngest son of Mr Brijlal Thakurathi and Mrs Bishna Devi Thakurathi. He was commissioned into the First Rifle Battalion, Nepalese Army in 1984 after graduating from the Nepalse Military Academy, Kharipati and Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, UK .
Major General Thakurathi is a graduate of the National Security and War Course (NSWC) from National Defense University, Pakistan. He has undertaken a number of courses including, the Officer's Basic Training, Commando Training, Company Commander and Staff Course, Command & Staff College and Battalion Commander's Course at home. His overseas courses and seminars include Platoon Commander's Battle Course (UK) and International Intelligence Directors Course (UK), Counter Insurgency Training (Sri Lanka), International Security Symposium Training from National Defense University (China), International Intelligence Fellow Program from National Intelligence University (USA) and Asia Pacific Intelligence Chief's Conference (APICC) held in Bangladesh and Brunei.
Major General Thakurathi has almost 34 years of military experience, with service during both peace and conflict time. He commanded the Gorakh Bahadur Battalion, Shreenath Battalion, No 3 Brigade and No 19 Brigades and also served as The Director General of Military Intelligence. He was the Nepalese Defense and Military attache in the USA from 2009 to 2011.
Major General Thakurathi has also held key staff billets at various levels, including as Brigade Major of No. 4 Brigade. He has vast experience of participating in Peacekeeping Missions, particularly in Lebanon and former Yugoslavia. He commanded Shreenath Battalion in MONUC mission in Democratic Republic of Congo.
He is currently appointed as the GOC at Mid-Western Division HQ, Surkhet.
Major General Thakurathi has been decorated with the prestigious Prabal Gorkha Dashin Bahu (Class IV), UN Medals for service in various UN Mission as well as the US Legion of Merit (Officer Class).
He is the Colonel Commandant of Nepal Cavalry.
Major General Thakurathi is a keen tennis player. His hobbies include trekking and biking. He is married to Mrs. Sangeeta Thakurathi and blessed with a son Priyesh, a medical doctor and a daughter Malika, currently pursuing an undergraduate degree.
