At present, he is the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of Nepalese Army and responsible to look after operational, intelligence and training aspects of the organization.
He commanded Ranasingh Dal Company, Singhanath Battalion, No. 19 Bde and Mid Division. He also commanded the Recruit Training Centre and was instructor in Mountain Warfare School, Army School, Intelligence School and Army Command & Staff College.
He held key billets including Officer in Charge of Int/Ops CelI of Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) (now DGMI), Deputy Chief of Staff (Ops) of Mid-West Div HQ and Deputy Chief of Directorate of Military Training (DMT) (now DGMT). He also served in the Directorate of Peace Keeping Operations and Directorate General of National Security & Development. He also served as Chief Security Officer to Right Honorable President of Nepal and Joint Coordinator of National Security Council.
As far as United Nations Peacekeeping Missions (UNPKO) experience is concerned, he has served twice in UNIFIL, Lebanon, as Platoon Commander (1983 and 1986) and once served in UNPROFOR, former Yugoslavia (1995), as Military Observer.
His selfless and unrelenting service to the country and organization has honored him with various medals and decorations like 'Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu', one of the prominent decorations of the country, Gaddhi Arohan Medal (coronation medal), Durgam Sewa Padak (Remote Area Service Medal), Sainik Sewa Padak (Military Service Medal), UNIFIL Medal and UNPROFOR Medal. Besides his demanding appointments, Lt. Gen Mahat is also the Colonel Commandant of Chandi Prasad Battalion, a dedicated mentor and guardian of the unit.
Reading, writing and trekking has always remained his passion. Pursuing his enthusiasm till date he has published two books of story collection titled ‘TIRSHANA’ and ‘APURO MAYA’. Lastly Lt. Gen Mahat is an ideal husband to Mrs. Madhavi Mahat and the couple is blessed with three children, two daughters and one son.
